Villandy - Château and Gardens
The last of the great Loire Valley chateaux built during the Renaissance, the Chateau de Villandry was built in 1532 by Jean Le Breton, finance minister to King Francis I, on the ruins of an ancient medieval fortress.
This elegant residence in Touraine stands out for the harmony of its architecture and its famous Renaissance gardens, considered among the most beautiful in Europe. Arranged across several terraces, they form a true botanical masterpiece combining a decorative vegetable garden, ornamental gardens, water gardens, a medicinal herb garden, and a maze.
In the early 20th century, Joachim Carvallo restored the estate to its former glory by renovating the château and recreating the gardens in the spirit of the French Renaissance.
Today, the Château de Villandry offers a unique experience in the heart of the Loire Valley, where the art of gardening comes to life through the changing seasons.
